So, here we go! On Saturday, September 2, the 2006 Penn State Nittany Lions season kicks off at Beaver Stadium with a great spirit of optimism carried over from last year’s rags-to-riches campaign. Our first opponent: the Akron Zips. This is a good first game test of a talented group of Lions, many of whom have never before played together in a real game. And this Turkey thinks that it will be a closer game than the 16.5 point betting line indicates. I just don’t see it being a 48-10 laugher, which is what it was in 2004 when these two teams last met.

Ernesto Might Make Akron Game More Interesting
Sitting here in Central Florida, where Tropical Storm Ernesto is expected momentarily, I happened to look at a forecast map for the wet storm. ????? ???? ??? ????? I noted that the the most recently forecast path takes Ernesto to Central Pennsylvania on Saturday morning. That could make the Akron game even more interesting, as drenching rain and gusting wind might make playing conditions difficult. ??? ???? ?? ??????? If it is too bad, we might not get to see much of Morelli’s passing game. ????? ????? ?? ????????
A Job for Kerry
Looks like Kerry Collins, quarterback of the Nittany Lions’ last undefeated Rose Bowl champion team, will be in the NFL this year after all. Recall that after starting his NFL career at Carolina, where he battled the alcohol demon, he had a brief stint with New Orleans, then went to the New York Giants for a couple of years including a Super Bowl, and was last seen in Oakland, where he was released at the end of last season in a salary cap move. Now, it appears that he’s in the final throes negotiating a deal with the Tennessee Titans, where he’ll join Penn Staters Rich Gardner and Calvin Lowry. Read about it here.
