A reader, Bob Zang, had commented on my 1964 pictures, stating that he used to hang around Beaver Stadium when it was next to Rec Hall (it was moved to its present location in 1959), and he wondered if any pictures of it could be found. I found this picture on the PSU Alumni Association, Greater Chicago Chapter web site, and thought I would share it with you. Click on it for a larger image.
Note the water tower. That’s where your Nittany Lions used to dress for games back in the good old days.

As a “townie”, and looking for landmarks, I’m guessing this pic is late ’40’s just after WWII. “48, ’49 maybe ’50, as College Heights hasn’t been developed yet and by looking at the yrs’ of the cars.

I am assuming that the photo was taken looking northwest from an aerial vantage point roughly above Pattee Library. Does that sound right to you?

to the far left of the water tower, you can see the roof of the Nittany Lion Inn. The road running along the far left is N. Atherton St., the long blg. at the next intersection is College Heights School and the barn seen in the distance at the edge of town is where the “Giant” mkt. its now. Cars seem to b turtle back chevys and older with a dodge or two all maybe 1950 at he newest. Depth of field in old cameras were not true, and it’s hard to tell the distance of many of the outer objects, but you’re right on as to vantage point from where it was taken. Love this stuff, find some more , we need some help from the loyal Turkey peeps.

The historical perspective would be a great thing for the off-season, as I do not get involved in basketball or baseball. It would also displace the time I would spend writing sophomoric political commentary!
