Before I get cranked up to proffer my irreverent opinions about who will win this year’s American Idol, I have some tidbits and follow-ups that are thematically relevant, to wit:
- Tight end Andrew Quarless was suspended from the wintering football team after being arrested for DUI following some Saturday night revelry. He blew a .084. Oh, by the way, Quarless is 19 and he was driving a white BMW that ostensibly belonged to “a friend.”
- LaschOut.com is reporting that Bill Cowher’s house in Raleigh is up for sale.
- Defensive tackle Phil Taylor was formally charged in last year’s HUB fraternity party incident.
- Chris Baker was exonerated by PSU Judicial Affairs for his alleged involvement in the same indicent. However, he still faces criminal charges relating to both the Melee at the Meridian and the HUB Hullabaloo.
- Austin Scott (remember him?) will participate in Pro Day at PSU on March 13 to show off his skills, or lack of same for NFL scouts. They’re going to just love his reluctance to smash through holes (on the field, that is).
And now, back to whatever I was doing before I got this inspiration.

Is the grande Turkey hinting at Cowher Power coming to PSU ? A football wet dream to be sure, but VERY doubtful. As a loyal employee of Eddie Rendell, when it comes time to “show me the money”, there is none to be had. But will bet you a meal at Ruths’ Chriss, Bill will be with an NFL team in the next year or two. As for the before mentioned players, they better get their heads out of their ass….no NFL team wants a player with a rap sheet.
The Nittany Turkey says
This Turkey is merely passing on derivative speculation about Cowher as reported in LaschOut.com beginning with his sleepover with Curley on February 24-25 and augmented by the discovery that his Raleigh house is on the market for something like 2.6 million.
Adding 2 + 2 and getting 69 is a specialty of the blogosphere, but two facts seem to be clear: he was hosted for an overnight by Curley and his house is for sale.
Lotta gaps to fill in, and I agree that PSU won’t be paying NFL bucks. On the other hand, Cowher is a family guy who genuinely lamented the dislocating effect of the NFL’s demands on his time with respect to spending quality time with his family. A “normal” college head coach’s salary, like a million and change, coupled with the potential to be closer to his wife and daughters, might have some small chance of attracting his attention.
Of course, if as some people think, Paterno will be offered a three-year contract extension, Cowher and all the other potential Paterno replacements will run for the hills.

the newest rumor is that paterno will get the contract extension if he names a successor. if not, no extension.
interested to see where this team is going to be by blue and white.

JD, that rumor reflects the worst kind of management politics and it paves the way for Bradley successorship, with preservation of the status quo being the side effect. No wonder people call Bradley “The Heir Apparent.” The king is dead; long live the king.
The program needs to be revitalized. Our image has lost its luster and it has been further tarnished by the recent plethora of off-field crapola. Trading JoePa for Scrap is not going to impose major change. It’s kind of like going from Bill to Hillary.
The admittedly distant prospect of Cowher brings hope that someone who knows how the game is played in 2008 and who has built a successful coaching and player personnel organization might just have a glimmer of interest. To that extent, it is worth a little unabated speculation.
Back to the rumor you brought up, I would hope that there are some other strings besides merely naming a successor. (e.g., String One: ANNOINTED SUCCESSOR CANNOT BE JAY).

Oh, and Jed, perhaps our rap sheet possessing players should sign up for the NBA draft, where they would fit in seamlessly.

Before I start may rant, as a side note , it seems that Tyrell Pryor is more interested in basketball that football. If so, that really puts PSU out of the running. Next , thanks jd I enjoy your input, so don’t take any of this personally. Who the hell is Joe Paterno to pick his replacement???????? I can’t think of any other coach, doing as poor of a job , was told ” Please Mr. Demigod, if you don’t mind in your foggy mid 60’s brain, would you maybe leave ; and tell us someone to take your place….please sir ….sorry to bother you …oh great Oz” What B.S.! the fact that this concept can even be portrayed in rumor shows the PSU fotoaball is now Paterno’s Subjective University football. OSU sure didn’t ask Cooper that question, nor LLyod Carr at Michigan…and don’t be shocked if you soon see Bobbie Bowdin(sp) strapped to a rail being carried up RT 95 by their fans. Football is ” What have you done for me this season”…. And if Curley doesn’t have the spine for this, he needs to go too….. We need to give Joe this year and a big going away party and may the interviews begin!!!!!!!Now I feel better…jed

Well, Cowher has opened up on the subject of his house being for sale, and has stated that he isn’t going anywhere. He’s just downsizing, building a smaller house in the Raleigh area, now that there’s only one daughter still at home. He said that the old house was just too big for the three of them.
So, apparent end of Cowher pipe dream and back to names like Bradley, Golden, and Schiano.
And, yes, I read that Plain Dealer article about Pryor and his basketball priority, but I got the feeling that it was his priority for the moment because he wanted to win a state championship. In that article was some disturbing stuff about how he thinks he knows more than his coach (he can think that, but he virtually expressed it in public). If his emphasis on basketball is pervasive, that wouldn’t surprise me, either. He can make a lot more money in the NBA than he can in the NFL.
