Schiano In Coach Search (for now)

The latest actual known name with an alleged hat in the PSU coaching ring is Greg Schiano, presently of Rutgers.

I’m getting a little tired of writing about the latest flash in the pan (LFITP) one minute and receiving news that LFITP has been awarded a lucrative new contract at his present venue.

Chris Peterson of Boise State was the most recent LFITP to have negotiated a contract extension to stay where he is. Nicely done, Peterson.

I have a strong feeling that some, if not all, of these NFL guys we’ve seen entering the fray have been using the Penn State job as a lever with their team’s front office.

The machinations and “leaks” have reached Favresque soap opera proportions. They’ll stop only when Joyner sexts a lewd photo of himself to Joan Rivers.

One rumor suggested that Tom Bradley was interviewed twice. Perhaps this is because with all the farting around waiting for some kind of results, Bradley will be the only viable candidate left by the time Joyner gets off the pot.

Has the committee started scouring the playgrounds for talented Pop Warner coaches yet? If they hurry up, they might be able to grab someone before cookies and milk!

Boring, Predictable Offense

Corey Giger of the Altoona Mirror hit a home run with his column today, at least from this Turkey’s perspective. His assertion: “PSU has been boring, predictable on offense for years but should get boost with coaching changes.” How can any fan who has been watching the 1980s Paterno offenses of the past umpteen years disagree with this premise?

This is one good reason that I welcome the forthcoming coaching change — and I hope it is a total housecleaning. Another good reason is that the BBDB defense that I’ve been whining about for years is getting dated, itself. Giger seems to make the assumption that the defense is sound, but I don’t believe that to be the case as long as today’s fast pass receivers are given 10 yard cushions. That, too, might have worked in 1986, but not today. It seems as if every offensive coordinator in the Big Ten knows he can beat Penn State with the slant across the middle a few times and then go for broke. Methinks the pass defense needs work.

In any case, Giger’s column is a worthwhile read. Like him, I hope that the new coaches completely revamp the offense to make it viable in the 21st Century.

Big 10 Bowl Malperformance

The Wall Street Journal has published a story about the Big Ten’s decline over the past several years, with (of course) prominent mention of Penn State and its travails this season. It is titled, “The Big Ten Has Seen Better Days.”
