Earlier, I had posted a media report that was erroneous. Big surprise. Penn State won’t necessarily have to give back all its 1989-2011 bowl trophies.
This just in, courtesy of reader Joe:
UPDATE: 5:15 p.m. – WHPTV’s Jason Bristol is now reporting that the NCAA did not direct Penn State to return the trophies, but that each bowl operator and PS must decide what is appropriate.
So another case of our journalist friends not doing any fact checking before publishing the story-why am I not surprised at this.
I would think that the bowl committees could care less about PS packing this stuff up and sending it back.
It would be nice if someone could confirm whether they are still on display or off to some secret spot to be buried with the Paterno statue.
I would not be surprised if in the context of moving forward with laser focus, they have already been picked up by FedEx and they are on their way to the land of garish sport coats.
We sincerely regret any inconvenience of anger resulting in thrown computers relating to our … ah, never mind!

Yes,-but did the NCAA expressly give Hot Rod permission to keep the trophies. If not, he will have to return them “out of respect for the victims.”

Good point.
Given Hot Rod’s recent propensity for token displays of obeisance and supplication, he ought to hold onto a few trophies that aren’t requested by the bowl organizers for use as offerings in future appeasement efforts when the shit is just about to hit the fan.

Apparently, Hot Rod, in anticipation of further appeasement, had the trophies removed last week.
