The NFL requires teams to cut their roster to 53 men and/or women in preparation for the start of the regular season. Cut-down day was Saturday, and some notable ex-Lions got good news and bad news.
Comings and Goings
The Oakland Raiders gave some good news to Matt McGloin, who remains the third-string QB behind rookie Derek Carr and veteran Matt Shaub, but at the same time gave the heave-ho to Englishman Jack Crawford.
The Washington Bearded Clams (we’re not allowed to say their REAL offensive name) dumped Evan Royster but retained turncoat Silas Redd, who’ll be a third-stringer behind Alfred Morris and Roy Helu.
Speaking of turncoats, the Pittsburgh Stillers kept ex-Lion and ex-Sooner Justin Brown, while shuffling Derek Moye to the practice squad.
And there is great news for all-academic math wiz John Urschel. He’s officially a Baltimore Raven. Don’t you love it when great guys like Urschel make it big? At the same time he got the good news, alas, ex-Nittany Lion A. Q. Shipley got the bad news from the Ravens, but he was later signed by the Indianapolis Colts.
Also set adrift by their respective NFL teams were Mike Farrell, Adam Gress, Nate Stupar (claimed by the Falcoons), Mickey Shuler, Jr. (claimed by the Jags), Devon Still, and Mike Zordich.
These Guys Ain’t Goin’ Nowheres
Navorro Bowman, ILB, San Francisco 49ers. Unfortunately, Bowman is on the PUP list with a torn ACL, so he won’t be playing at least the first six games.
Good ol’ reliable Robbie Gould, K, Chicago Bears. He’s entering his 11th NFL season and he remains one of the best kickers in the league.
Tamba Hali, OLB, Kansas City Chiefs. Kinda shaky with a knee injury as he enters his 10th year in the NFL.
Sean Lee, MLB, Dallas Cowboys. Injured reserve. Will not play this season due to a torn ACL suffered in June.
Mike Mauti, ILB, Minnesota Vikings.
Jared Odrick, DT, Miami Dolphins.
Rich Ohrnberger, G, San Diego Chargers. He was signed to a one-year contract for this, his seventh year.
Paul Poszlusznzy, MLB, Jacksonville Jagwires.
Andrew Quarless, TE, Green Bay Packers. “God’s Gift” returns for a sixth year in the NFL.
Allen Robinson, WR, Jacksonville Jaggoffs. The local press thinks he’s one bright, shining hope for new life at Jax once Bortles is extablished at quarterback.
Cameron Wake, DE, Miami Dolphins. Subject of trade rumors but rumors quashed.
