Now that cut-down day has passed and NFL rosters are essentially in stasis, I’ll give you the complete run-down on Penn State players in the NFL and those who didn’t make it.
PSU 34, Akron 16
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA, Sept. 2 — The Nittany Lions braved inclement conditions at Beaver Stadium to capture their first victory of the season, beating the defending MAC champion Akron Zips 34–16. The game did not go completely as this Turkey expected; however, we got to see what works and what needs work.
Alas, unless you were lucky enough to have been one of the 106,505 rain-soaked fans at Beaver Stadium, you got to experience it through the veil of ESPN2’s worst announcing crew. The rain would have been preferable. More on this less than dynamic duo later.
Akron on the Radar Screen
So, here we go! On Saturday, September 2, the 2006 Penn State Nittany Lions season kicks off at Beaver Stadium with a great spirit of optimism carried over from last year’s rags-to-riches campaign. Our first opponent: the Akron Zips. This is a good first game test of a talented group of Lions, many of whom have never before played together in a real game. And this Turkey thinks that it will be a closer game than the 16.5 point betting line indicates. I just don’t see it being a 48-10 laugher, which is what it was in 2004 when these two teams last met.
