More Flash Than Dash, and That’s No Trash

Flash: Penn State 33, Kent State 13

The bated anticipation of a new offense and a revamped defense had us on pins and needles awaiting this anticlimactic effort, but we learned a few things from it. The Nittany Lions (1-0) beat the Golden Flashes (0-1) in a sloppy effort that gave us a flash of Joe Moorhead’s offense for the first time in a real game situation for Penn State.

I typically write sooner after the game, but this one left me rather uninspired. It was more flash than dash and that’s no trash.

Our closest prediction this week emanated from Artificially Sweetened, whose 35-10 prognostication edged out Big Al’s 30-10. The Golden Flashes covered the spread by the slimmest of margins, as Al said they would, but the total of 46 points made the “over” the winning bet by one measly point. [Read more…]

Nittany Lions Host Golden Flashes in Season Opener

Are you ready? Well, ready or not, here it comes! Bring on the Golden Flashes!

Kent State UniversitySaturday, September 3, is the start of the 2016 Nittany Lions campaign, in which the mighty Penn State Nittany Lions (0-0) will host the Kent State Golden Flashes (0-0) to kick off the season. Both teams are on extended losing streaks. Kent State has lost five straight,while Penn State has lost four in a row. Oy vey, something’s got to give, already, unless they both stink the place up and end up with a tie.

But seriously, folks, Penn State leads the all-time series 4-0. The most recent two meetings have been shutouts, with the Nittany Lions prevailing 24-0 and 34-0 in 2010 and 2013, respectively. This year’s game might well look similar. [Read more…]

80 Years of AP Polls

My first irrelevant observation concerns yesterday morning’s revelation by the AP that PSU is #12th best team all-time, by whatever criteria they use. The all-time AP poll was published on the 80th anniversary of the inception of the poll. Ohio State won the top slot. I think poll appearances, times picked as #1, etc., weigh on their ranking. (Of course they do! They’re the only facts that don’t involve complex interpretation, even though the polls are largely based on sportswriters’ opinions, which, like assholes, we all have to have.
